Locked4Kids packs Emballage

Locked4Kids attracts numerous interested parties at Emballage 2014

With the Emballage trade fair just behind us, Locked4Kids has seen it’s share of interested people. Although Locked4Kids was located in one of the equipment halls of the fair, the customer’s attention was quickly drawn to something else when they reached Romaco’s stand – Locked4Kids. The world’s first reclosable child resistant carton.

Sharing the stand with Romaco offered a fantastic opportunity for a demonstration of the packaging process of Locked4Kids on a conventional carton packaging machine. It is possible to process Locked4Kids on most conventional cartoning machine with only some minor adjustments and is applicable for many different hazardous products (e.a. pharmaceutical- or veterinair products).

The need for child-resistant packaging became evident on the fair and the press also showed a lot of interest in this innovation in child-resistant packaging, which can potentially save thousands of children’s lives.

Locked4Kids demonstration at Emballage 2014

The highlight of this year’s Emballage exhibition will be a demonstration of Locked4Kids; the Child Resistant Recolsable Carton box which is manufactured by Ecobliss. The newly patented “Locked4kids” carton box will be handled on one of Romaco’s machines during the exhibition.

Both companies work on a continuous improvement basis, largely investing their resources in innovation as a key factor for supporting quality of life as well as keeping the pace with market evolution.

Locked4Kids is a simple, inexpensive and mass-producible packaging solution consisting of a carton box and a PET tray, which can contain blisters or other pharmaceutical products and leaflet. The Locked4Kids packaging is composed of a carton box containing a PET tray. The box has openings on the sides in which the blister tray is automatically locked when it is pushed all the way into the box. For this, hooks are attached to the edge of the blister tray. In order to be able to open the packaging, both hooks have to be pushed simultaneously and held. Only then the tray can be pulled out of the box. This is very difficult for small children. The hooks are placed diagonally to one another at a distance that cannot be spanned by the hand of a small child, but which is no problem for adults. The carton box is coated with a tear resistant laminate so as to prevent children from ripping it apart. Ecobliss manufactured two variants of Locked4kids Cartons: The US Locked4Kids Carton has been tested against F=1 on multiple sizes by the ISO 17025 certified testing institute BVI, according the US CPSC regulation 16 C.F.R. § 1700.20. Approved by the US Product Safety Commission CPSC. When opened, all the components of the packaging stay connected (carton – tray – blisterstrips). The EU Locked4Kids Carton has been tested on multiple sizes by the ISO 17025 certified testing institute BVI, and certified against the ISO/EN 8317 standard. When opened, the tray can be pulled out of the carton and the blisters can be removed from the tray.

Mass production of the Locked4Kids Carton is easily realized on standard pharmaceutical packaging equipment with only minor adjustments. Blisterstrips are loaded from top down into the tray and the tray is inserted into the carton. This design ensures the same packaging process speeds as for regular (non CR) cartons and is a very cost effective solution. Furthermore the carton and blister offers protection to the product such as tamper evidence and environmental protection. One final important benefit of blister packaging in patient compliance is that pharmacists have a greater opportunity to communicate with and advise their patients because less time is necessary to fill the prescription.

October 2014, the packaging concept won the Dutch “Zilveren Noot” award and the CPhI Pharma Award for Innovation in Packaging.

Ecobliss is focused to make Locked4Kids cartons available on a global scale, by licensing pharmaceutical carton manufacturers for production and marketing. If you are interested Locked4Kids or you want to get licenced, please contact Ron Linssen, Managing Director, Locked4Kids BV.

Emballage 2014 will be held in France, Paris, on November 17-20th 2014. The Locked4Kids demonstration will be given at stand 5A H 002.

Sensational Atmosphere at interpack 2014

Visitor number “cracks” the 175,000 mark

Interpack 2014 was characterised by an outstanding atmosphere prevailing amongst the approx. 2,700 exhibitors and 175,000 visitors in the 19 halls of the completely booked Düsseldorf Exhibition Centre. The signs for this were already apparent at a very early stage of the world’s most important trade fair for the packaging sector and its associated process industries.

The exhibitors at interpack 2014 met with numerous high-ranking visitors from all over the world already from the start of the trade fair. Many companies experienced such a rush that their stands reached their capacity limits several times. Visitor interest and qualification as well as their willingness to invest is said to have been clearly higher yet again than at the already excellent previous event. A great many exhibitors rated the concrete business deals and sales concluded – part of which were absolutely spontaneous – as particularly positive.

Commenting on this, Friedbert Klefenz, President of the interpack Exhibitors’ Advisory Board 2014 and President of Bosch Packaging Technology, said: “We are very satisfied with the quantity and quality of visitors at our stand. The interest taken in our technologies that make a vital contribution to global health and nutrition was enormous. We are pleased with the high number of leads produced, including many top executives and potential new customers. Similar comments came from other exhibitors. We were equally thrilled by the high number of international visitors and exhibitors – some 75% of the exhibiting enterprises were headquartered outside Germany. With this interpack has confirmed its reputation as the world’s leading trade fair for the packaging sector.”

“interpack has provided impressive proof of its leading international role yet again this year. This success confirms our fundamental philosophy of addressing the international industries in their respective markets in a very targeted manner – already in the run-up to the event thereby bringing them to their most important event in Düsseldorf every three years”, explained Werner Matthias Dornscheidt, President & CEO of Messe Düsseldorf.

Boasting a percentage of foreign visitors of as much as 66%, interpack 2014 has not only set a new record for itself but also a top rating across all Messe Düsseldorf events. Visitors from 120 nations in total travelled to Düsseldorf.

The dominating themes at interpack 2014 were resource efficiency for plant and machinery as well as for packaging material usage, quality and safety to guarantee perfect and counterfeit-proof finished products – especially in such touchy segments as Food/Beverage and Pharmaceuticals – as well as diversity and flexibility for an ever wider range and shorter product cycles. These themes were addressed by a particularly high number of innovations in the halls. However, interpack underscores its importance not only with the sheer multitude of innovations and breadth of its exhibitor ranges but also with especially innovative themes, adds Bernd Jablonowski, Director of interpack & SAVE FOOD:

“For a leading international trade fair it is not enough just to rent out exhibition space and offer perfect organisation. Trend themes must be identified, anchored in the concept and finally also driven in a consistent manner. This is the only way to secure thematic leadership in an industry. We have succeeded in doing this very well once again this year. The concepts of both Innovationparc Packaging and the METAL PACKAGING PLAZA were right on target with the target groups.”

Successful second SAVE FOOD Congress

SAVE FOOD proved a particularly attention-grabbing theme at interpack. The initiative of the same name combats food losses and waste and involves such partners as the Food and Agriculture Organisation of United Nations (FAO) and the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) as well as over 110 members from the industry. The SAVE FOOD Congress already started the day before the trade fair. On the first of its two themed days it addressed non-profit organisations, which shed some light on the problems from political and social angles. The second half of the event dealt with solutions and Best Practice presented by enterprises. Even more impressively than at the kick-off event three years ago the Congress showed how the problem of global food losses and waste can be fought across the entire value chain.

Contributions came from prominent guests and participants such as FAO and UNEP representatives, the Senegalese Minister and musician Youssou N’Dour and the former German Federal Minister Renate Künast in addition to the numerous lectures and panel discussions that identified practical approaches. In excess of a total of 450 delegates participated in the Congress. When the event drew to a close all parties involved agreed that the objectives of SAVE FOOD can only be achieved with concerted action and pooled expertise as well as the competence of all stakeholders – a fundamental intention of the Initiative. For the entire duration of interpack 2014 Innovationparc Packaging presented solutions and ideas for fighting food losses and waste.

In spring 2017 the motto for experts from throughout the world will once again read “Welcome Home” to Düsseldorf. The exact dates will be announced at a later stage.

Record success as Packaging Innovations attracts 6,000 visitors

Packaging Innovations, the UK’s biggest packaging show, attracted 6004 unique visitors over the two days, an 18% increase on last year, with 77% of exhibitors rebooking onsite for next year’s show

The show, which took place at Birmingham’s NEC, 26 & 27 February 2014, was co-located with six other events: Ecopack, Contract Pack, Packtech, Print Innovations, Labelling Innovations, and Converting.

It included packaging buyers from major names such as GlaxoSmithKline, Lush Cosmetics, Heineken, Britvic Soft Drinks, Danone, Asda and Proctor & Gamble.

Alison Church, Event Director at easyFairs UK, said she was delighted with the turnout.

“The show was lively from start to finish, with both visitor and exhibitor numbers up, we are in a great position to take the show to new heights next year. 2015 will be an even bigger year for us, as the show will be celebrating its 10th edition, so it’s an exciting time for those who are involved with the show.”

Amongst the highlights of the show were Bag Re:Born which launched a new eco-innovation for the carrier bag market; i-Sub Digital successfully rolled out its exclusive Digi-Foil system, which creates colour-accurate mock-ups in under ten minutes; plus Folding carton manufacturer, Benson Group, unveiled its new range of food-to-go products under the Benson Delilicious brand name.

Hayley Mustad, key account manager, at IBIS Packaging Solutions, exhibiting at the show, said:

“The footfall this year has been great, with key decision makers from blue chip companies coming onto the stand. Great show, so much so we have booked for 2015, and gone for a bigger stand!”

Also exhibiting at the show was Mark Baker-Homes, director of business development at Intec Printing Solutions, who said there was considerable interest and demand for the packaging and labelling market.

“We had blue chip companies coming onto the stand, but also start-ups looking to get into packaging with genuine enthusiasm, which is great to see. We could not have asked for a better show and the easyFairs team is great – they provide fantastic show support, and realise the true value of business. We’ll certainly be here next year.”

The event included a two-day comprehensive free-to-attend learnShops seminar programme, with speakers from DHL Supply Chain, Iceland Foods, The Barts Ingredients TM Co Ltd, Recoup, Marks and Spencer, Wilkinson, Tesco, and Oloves.

On the second day, Julia Cole, UK and Ireland marketing manager at HP, and Trevor Smith from Amberley Adhesive Labels, demonstrated how digital can help brands create a more personal relationship with consumers. Cole said:

“As brands learn of the capabilities of digital printing for packaging, they will begin to leverage those techniques that differentiate their products and drive sales by extending their marketing campaigns in to the packaging itself. Shorter runs, just in time delivery and minimal inventory are all key factors in reducing costs and reducing the time to market and digital can help make this possible.”

The BIG Packaging Debate attracted over 100 visitors to hear a panel of packaging experts discuss: ‘Packaging – designed for the consumer or the supply chain?’.

This year’s panel, chaired by Kevin Vyse, included Echo Brand Design, DHL Packaging Services Europe, Alliance Boots and The Consumer Voice held the general opinion that the supply chain may well be increasing in complexity, but so are consumers’ lives and the way we market to them. The opinion was that flexibility and agility was key to future retail and concluded that perhaps there is a general need for packaging to reflect in-store and online demands more simply, with the real opportunity to reduce secondary packaging. Continuing to educate the consumer about the possibilities of reusing or refilling a product, rather than recycling was also an underlying theme.

Chris Blackwell, marketing manager at Delipca, said of the show: “Great speaker line-up from major brand owners to packaging converters and logistics. This year’s seminars have been really high quality and very informative, providing the latest thinking and developments within the packaging and print industry.”

The next UK packaging event in 2014 takes place at the Business Design Centre in London on 30 September and 1 October 2014 focusing on its two strong concepts – Packaging Innovations and Luxury Packaging.

Worldstar Awards 2013 – We have done it again!

Ecobliss can proudly say…We have done it again!!

In 2012 Ecobliss entered the competition with three entries into the WorldStar completion in three different categories: ‘Electronics’, ‘Household’ and ’Other”.  All three entries (100% score!!) received an Award from the WPO jury. This year, Ecobliss has managed to convince the jury of the “Worldstar Competition” once more, this time with the ”Easy Opening” package.

The “Easy Opening” package may be one of Ecobliss’ most popular designs. A blister packaging of which a part of the card board is bent over, to enable the blister to slide out. The type of products that can be packed into the easy opening type of blister is almost unlimited. Batteries, tapes, automotive lamps, spark plugs, disposables, LED and energy saving lamps are typical products to be packed in an easy opening blister.

Many consumers look at blister packaging in a negative way because of the difficult and unpleasant method of opening. Easy opening packaging can therefore be an important part of your marketing strategy as it is recognized as ‘friendly’. It offers the customer convenience for which your brand will be appreciated.
